Day makeup differs from evening makeup, simply because of the lighting. This means wearing a traditional smokey eye in the day is waaay too harsh. It doesn't look appealing or attractive. Any blue in the undertone of the light, such as sun light, florescent light, etc. is cool light. It isn't forgiving light. Meaning every imperfection is exposed. This is why back in the day, still now, even, actresses who have cameras use certain lighting in the camera, certain lens, certain lightening (if they can have it their way, as in shooting isn't outdoors), camera angle to be in a certain position, so the actress or actor, more common with an actress can look younger. Warm lighting (light with an orange undertone), is often used as it is forgiving. What example do I have to demonstrate what light has orange in the undertone? Restaurants. Very flattering lighting. Camouflages imperfections. Forgiving light.
Day makeup is meant to be light. You can go smokey, however use the eye shadows in the brown family; light browns to medium browns. Dark brown depending on the undertone of the skin can be too harsh. Olive skin to dark skin go dark brown. Use pastels hues, warm colours, cool colours. Keep the makeup light. Do not go heavy in colour or with your hand. Save it for the evening on a night out the girls or for date night.
